Testimonial

"Frank's workshop was outstanding. The information was practical; his method of presentation was relaxed, methodical, and thorough. He was very generous with his time and effort, and made a very strong connection with those in attendance. I cannot express how pleased I am with what I was able to accomplish!
Thank you for Mr. DeGregorio's talents as a teacher and technical advisor."

This workshop presents a psychophysiological model of the anxiety disorders, with an emphasis on mindfulness practices, breath training, and heart rate variability biofeedback. The presenter will review the typical course of the anxiety disorders, the role of cognitive attribution, avoidance behavior, and stimulus generalization in the escalation of anxiety states. The presenter will introduce a psychophysiological assessment process for the anxiety disorders, utilizing clinical interview, capnometry, autonomic baseline measures, and heart rate variability. The course provides a integrative framework for treating anxiety disorders, emphasizing breath training, heart rate variability biofeedback, cognitive behavioral education, and mindfulness practices. The presenter will provide three case narratives illustrating the applications of mindfulness and biofeedback training for anxiety.

Learning Objectives: Each participant in the workshop will:

  • acquire a basic orientation to a cognitive/psychophysiological model of anxiety
  • learn the typical course of anxiety disorders, and the role of cognitive attribution, avoidance behavior, and stimulus generalization
  • understand respiratory physiology and the relevance of breath training for anxiety management
  • understand cardiovascular physiology, and the physiological underpinnings of HRV biofeedback
  • learn assessment procedures including a psychophysiological baseline, and a capnometric evaluation of respiration with a hyperventilation trial for anxiety disorders
  • master basic skills in applying HRV biofeedback managing anxiety episodes, and anxiety disorders
